About KAH Cambridge
Kids Against Hunger® is an international food relief campaign of Feeding Children International. Our mission is to eradicate world hunger and prevent any more children from starving to death.
The solution is a revolutionary food packet that’s been developed by some of the world’s leading food scientists at Cargill, Pillsbury, General Mills and Archer Daniels Midland. This one packet provides six nutritionally-complete servings to feed the starving children around the world as well as the hungry here at home.
The Kids Against Hunger® program began as a small locally-based project of its parent organization, Feeding Children International. However, before long, the idea of kids helping other kids to combat hunger grew in popularity. In 2005, Cambridge became the 21st Satellite to launch. The program has since then rapidly expanded to 73 packaging satellites spread across the United States with a national goal of 500 packaging satellites.
Kids Against Hunger® not only nourishes hungry children, but the spirit of its volunteers. Each week, as volunteers package hundreds of much-needed food servings, they also get a chance to talk, share, laugh and reconnect with one another through the program. More importantly, through their packaging efforts, volunteers learn and reaffirm the importance of looking beyond themselves and towards serving the needs of others as well as gaining a global awareness of hunger needs.
The Kids Against Hunger – Cambridge Satellite was the 21st satellite when it began in March, 2005. In 2005, with only a handful of young people and families contributing a few hours we shipped over 50,000 meals to Tsunami relief efforts, to Katrina relief efforts and to Pakistan earthquake victims in that year. Then in 2008 we shipped 446 boxes packed with 97,228 meals. Of the 97,228 meals, 8424 of those meals went to local food shelves.
The physical location of our packaging warehouse is currently located and supported by Lakeside Christian Church/ Chadashchay Christian Center. Our volunteers come from the local 5 county area of Pine, Isanti, Chisago, Kanabec, and Milacs (PICKM) counties; and financing from many generous donars.
The Food
The meal ingredients (rice, soy, vitamins & flavoring, vegetables) are formulated by food scientists to provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by an undernourished child’s body and mind. The food is also acceptable to the broad diversity of ethnic tastes and religious differences around the world. The food is fortified with 21 essential vitamins and offers all 9 of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition, something that can’t be said about other typical food relief sources such as rice or beans alone. This protein and nutrient-rich formula reverses the starvation process and improves physical health as well as the child’s mental capacity to learn. It is also very simple to prepare, requiring only 6 cups of boiling water to make a complete meal.
